Eating Out: Casa De Luz

Besides sharing recipes, one of the things I really want to do with this blog is talk about eating out at restaurants as a vegan. It can be kind of challenging at times, and I normally can't find nearly enough information when I search for it online, especially about specific restaurants and what I can eat there. I've also discovered a lot of really amazing restaurants since going vegan that I probably wouldn't have tried otherwise, so I'm really excited to share those, too!

And so, for my first restaurant post, I bring you: Casa De Luz.

I wish I could tell you that this restaurant is in Dallas (like me), but it's actually in Austin. However, it's still one of my favorites because not only is the food completely delicious, but everything is vegan, plant based, whole grain, organic, and free of added oil--meaning I can eat ANYTHING they serve. That is rare. 

The restaurant itself is also really cool: it's community seating, and they serve just one meal to everyone, which differs depending on whether you're there for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Sometimes it's kind of nice not to have to decide what you want and just have someone sit down awesome food in front of you, but if you're curious before you go, you can check out their daily menu on their website. On this particular visit (for dinner), they were serving:

Soup: 
Zucchini and Yellow Squash

Salad: 
Fresh Greens with a Sesame Almond Basil Parsley Dressing

Entree: 
Red Beans
Millet with a Mushroom Onion Tamari Gravy
Steamed Green Beans and Snap Peas with Pumpkin Seed and Garlic
Blanched Greens with a Sunflower Cucumber Balsamic Sauce
Pickled Red Sauerkraut


For dessert, I had a berry pie, which was incredible. The desserts (also all vegan) aren't included with the meal and may incorporate some oil depending on which one you pick (whereas the rest of their food does not), but they do avoid processed flours (i.e. anything enriched, white, etc) are are still ridiculously wholesome as far as dessert goes. Any place with dessert that health conscious gets a huge thumbs up from me.  

They also have various hot and iced teas, including a type of tea called Kukicha or "twig tea" (pictured). This was actually the first place I ever tried--or heard of--Kukicha, and it's become one of my favorite teas. It also doesn't hurt that it has 6 times the calcium of cow's milk and 2.5 times the vitamin C of an orange.

Fingers crossed that they open one of these in Dallas someday, or I may just have to move to Austin...
